When Do the Foods We Eat Begin to Dictate our Health?

We now know unequivocally that what we choose to eat has the most direct and undeniable impaceating-hot-dogt on our health… even when acknowledging environmental influences that overtax our liver and other organs.

The challenge we humans deal with is that the effects of bad food choices isn’t immediate, unlike our body’s more quick reaction to some toxins or allergenic foods. Consuming sugar, simple carbs, fat-laden, and highly processed foods takes time to display the damage it is doing to your insides.

Dr. David Katz writes: “Imagine if you drank a soda, and your waist circumference instantly increased by two inches. It likely will — it’s just a matter of time.”

And by the way, SUGAR is a wonderful AGING agent!

According to studies conducted by the National Institutes of Health:

“The effect of sugars on aging skin is governed by the simple act of covalently cross-linking two collagen fibers, which renders both of them incapable of easy repair.
Glucose and fructose link the amino acids present in the collagen and elastin that support the dermis, producing advanced glycation end products or “AGEs.”

This process is accelerated in all body tissues when sugar is elevated and is further stimulated by ultraviolet light in the skin. The effect on vascular, renal, retinal, coronary, and cutaneous tissues is being defined.”

When Does What We Eat Begin to Dictate Our Health?

There are theories now that what our parents ate may have an affect on our own health, and what you eat will affect the health of your children!  Quite a responsibility isn’t it?  Do you think anyone really thinks about that when they reach for a handful of french fries or an ice cream sundae?eating-a-strawberry

A new study suggests that eating poorly during pregnancy can increase your children’s and your grand-children’s risk of cancer, even if they eat healthily.

The risk associated with high-fat diets, especially those high in omega-6 fatty acids, “can be passed from one generation to another without any further exposure,” said lead researcher Sonia de Assis of Georgetown University.”

Frightening thought, but one that underlines the need to live our lives ‘consciously’, something you learn once diagnosed with a serious illness.

With this in mind, I would like to recommend that you begin to look very carefully at the list of ingredients in the ready-made or processed foods you buy, whether for yourself or your children.  Only you can put a stop to the disease-promoting junk that the ‘food industry’ is selling you.

INFANT FORMULAS – Which are Safe?newborn-drinking

One of the areas that concern me is INFANT FOOD and FORMULA.  We have been blessed with 4 new babies in our family over the last 3 months.  My nieces and nephews are having children, and it’s such a joy.

Recently, I was asked to look into safe baby formulas, and I was shocked to find that ONLY ONE made me feel comfortable to recommend: Baby’s Only Organic brand. This is “the only formula that contains USDA organic-compliant DHA. Babies who are fed other organic and conventional formulas are consuming life’sDHA™ oils, which are extracted using hexane solvent and treated with acid, and bleach.”

Acid and Bleach… that’s what you want!

When the item we are buying is for vulnerable adults or children, it behooves us to not only read the labels, but understand how the product is made.

CHINA and MONSANTO and Our Health

How a product is made is one reason I will not buy ANYthing made in CHINA.  We have been harmed by ingredients too often, and keep learning that the processing and manufacturing methods used are very questionable.  I put every item back on the shelf if it’s made there, because I will not support business that is purely based on profit with no thought to environment or health.

MONSANTO is another company I do not support.  Click on the link to read how their products are damaging our health and our environment. Their astounding negative impact on our lives and world distresses me.

Many corporations lack ‘humanity’ and admirable ethics, but Monsanto is a giant who, in the name of profits, happily tramps on small struggling farms and seeks to gain compensation from them when Monsanto’s unwanted airborne GMO seeds infiltrate those farms!!  It actually makes me sick that such nonsense is allowed to go on in a country like ours.

So please be diligent about your choices.  It will take a little effort, but your precious good health and potentially that of your descendants is at stake!

  1. I learned about a year and a half ago when I had to adopt a very clean diet that even eating better than most people wasn’t good enough. Our American diets are just that bad. Retrospectively looking back now, I can see that food-related damage was showing up in my health way back in my 20s. Part of the problem is our traditional medical system doesn’t help us see these connections and in some cases doesn’t even acknowledge them. I agree with you, until things get better in our food system, its up to us.

    1. It sure is. I watched parents buying their children colored candies in long tubes at the market I was in, and wondered if a sticker with a warning that said, “may be toxic” wouldn’t have been appropriate. There was nothing in the product but sugar, food coloring and a preservative!

  2. I have constantly been changing my eating habits. I find it even more difficult to make sure the food AND non-edible items I buy do no harm, AND do not come from China!I use powdered milk. But now make my own from organic soy products, brown rice, or raw organic almonds. It is easier, of course, to just purchase the standard powdered milk sold in grocery stores. I think they may be polluted, or not as healthy as they should be.

I hope you print more of your examples of how to substitute safe products and not rely on Cina’s prolific products in our stores here in the US.

I am enjoying these changes more and more, now that I know how to make my own safer products, and find information on safer products too.

Thank you for such a versatile blog! Georgia Carman

  3. Good work Georgia! Once we are settled in our new home (moving in a week!) I want to make my own Almond milk. I just found out that they put casein in commercial Almond Milk.. which is nuts (no pun intended) since that is a milk product and people who drink Almond milk are obviously hoping to stay away from dairy products!!
    Bravo sweet lady!
